Taj Mahal

Of course this is the one place you have all heard of and it lived up to the hype.  It was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his second wife, Mutaz Mahal, who died in childbirth.  Started in the same year of 1631 it was not completed until 1653.  When you arrive there is the entrance way to go through first in the red sandstone like many other sites.

And then you get the first view

Once through the arch you head along the gardens towards the main building

At first it seems quite small because it is all you see on the horizon, there is nothing to compare it with but as you get closer you realise how big its is.

To project the marble you have to take your shoes off or wear some very tasteful slippers.

The building has many fine carvings in the marble and the decoration is achieved with inlaid semi-precious stones. Below is the main arch at the rear.

The site is symmetrical and there are two buildings either side of the mausoleum, one is a hostel the other is a mosque.  These were built in the red sandstone and one can be seen in the distance below.

Below is a view of the gardens at the front from the raised platform. And the lawn being mowed.

And of course there is the newer landmark of 'Diana's Seat' that people wish to get their picture taken at.

These two were happy to have one taken from a different position.
