Dust

Dust is a big problem in and around Delhi, particularly in the heat of summer.  A lot is lifted off the ground but the winds also bring in sand from the dessert that lie to the south west in Rajasthan.  We have had a number of dust storms, the winds become very strong and as well as bringing in new sand they will lift dust off the ground.  The visibility reduces significantly a bit like fog, and you can smell the dust in the air.  Of course this is not good for anyone with chest  problems.

The other side effect is in the house.  Where the window and door fittings are not good, as many of them aren't, then the dust comes into the house.  we are not talking normal house dust here, this can be quite thick and after a storm a previously cleaned surface becomes coated again.  Even without storms, surfaces will get covered again in the space of a few days.  The floors and surfaces therefore require regular wiping, this is best done with a damp cloth or you just move the dust on again!

These pictures show the kitchen surfaces after a dust storm, they had been cleaned the previous night!. The cloth above shows how much is lifted with a quick wipe.
